Bunk-In Program For Full-Time College Students

Goals of The Program

The term “bunk-in” represents a unique community service opportunity with Port Jefferson EMS. The “bunk-in college student” is a person who serves the department and a community in a volunteer capacity as a “live-in” or “residential” emergency medical responder. In return, Port Jefferson EMS provides semester long living accommodations for bunk-ins. All bunk-ins must be full time students at an accredited 2 or 4 year university and maintain a minimum 2.5GPA at all times. Bunk-ins must also reside outside of Nassau or Suffolk County, New York.

Accommodations

Port Jefferson EMS is located in the Hamlet of Mt. Sinai just outside the Village of Port Jefferson. The agency operates out of 1 station and is approximately 7 minutes from the Stony Brook campus. Bunk-ins will be provided a bed, desk and a locker. Station facilities include a bunkroom, kitchen, lounge, showers, men’s and women’s restrooms, classrooms, and a study area with a computer workstation. Parking is available for personal vehicles. Cable television and wireless internet access is also provided at the station

Obligations

Bunk in students must be certified as an EMT or greater and be able to obtain reciprocity in NYS. Bunk in students must also have experience driving an ambulance, and have documentable time as a member or employee of a certified ambulance service prior to being accepted into program.
  • Enter into a written contract with Port Jefferson EMS stipulating duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintain living area, and facilities at the station that the bunk-in is assigned to.
  • Fulfill duty schedule that consists of three 8 hour shifts, every week.
  • Bunk-ins will be expected to respond to all alarms when in quarters when requested , unless it is 120 minutes or less before class or prearranged .
  • Maintain a minimum of a 2.5 GPA as a full time student (12 credit min) at Stony Brook University.
  • Attend a specified amount (minimal) of fire and emergency training as required by New York State, or PJEMS.
  • Attend weekly training sessions.

Miscellaneous

Each bunk-in must provide linens and towels. Meals are not provided but the station kitchen is well equipped and available for use. There is also an out door gas grill for the warmer months. Duty Uniforms are provided for all bunk-ins.
