Course Description
This course is for non-ambulance professional rescuers who are first to arrive at an emergency medical scene to provide pre-hospital care. Topics covered are patient assessment, CPR review, airway, shock, wound management, full body immobilization, and initial treatment for other medical emergencies. Students successfully completing this course are eligible for New York State Department of Health Certified First Responder certification. Thirty-four instruction hours, 22 laboratory hours.
Audience
The Certified First Responder is an integral part of the Emergency Medical Services System. The term “Certified First Responder” has been applied to the first individual who arrives at the scene regardless of the individual type of credential, i.e., Police, Fire, or EMS. It is the goal of the New York State Certified First Responder curriculum to provide students with the core knowledge, skills, and attitude to function in the capacity of a Certified First Responder.
