Enroll in an Emergency Medical Technician training course offered at the Port Jefferson Ambulance EMS Academy, and take the first step to a real future in the rapidly growing world of healthcare.
Our EMT training course, which is offered at Port Jefferson Ambulance EMS Academy, includes a mixture of practical and lecture-based instruction. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in practical skills as well as on written examinations. In addition, each student will complete a 16-hour ambulance rotation.
Students who successfully complete all course requirements will take the NYS EMT Certification exams.
At the conclusion of the course, the EMT will have demonstrated competency in:
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for Emergency Medical Technicians and paramedics have been increasing steadily since 2002, and employment for these positions is expected to grow faster than the average through 2016. Job prospects are predicted to be good, particularly in tri-state area and with private ambulance services.
Employment of emergency medical technicians and paramedics is expected to grow by 19 percent between 2006 and 2016, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Full-time paid EMTs and paramedics will be needed to replace unpaid volunteers, as it is becoming increasingly difficult for emergency medical services to recruit and retain unpaid volunteers. As a result, more paid EMTs and paramedics will be needed. Furthermore, as the large baby boom generation ages and becomes more likely to have medical emergencies, demand will increase for EMTs and paramedics. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also predicts continued demand for part-time, volunteer EMTs and paramedics in rural areas and smaller metropolitan areas.
You are eligible to enroll in an EMT training course if:
You do NOT need a high school diploma, GED, driver’s license, or US citizenship/green card to enroll in the EMT training course and earn your certification. However, these and other factors may affect your hiring potential. A candidate with a criminal conviction may attend and complete all of the requirements of the EMT course. However, the candidate will not be permitted to take the NYS certification exam until the DOH has reviewed the circumstances of the conviction(s) and made a determination that the candidate does not demonstrate a risk or danger to patients.
Each of our courses involves 180 hours of training. Depending on the course schedule you select, attendance requirements may vary from 29 to 45 sessions, and the total duration of the course may be anywhere from 3 to 5 months.
Please see our upcoming schedule of training opportunities.
The cost of the EMT course for EMS/Fire Personnel who belong to a NYS EMS Agency is $130. This fee covers the cost of the course materials and textbook.
For non-EMS personnel, the cost of the course is $905. These fees are required at the time of registration. In addition, students will be required to purchase a blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, and pocket face mask prior to session 5.
