On April 1st, Port Jefferson EMS had the pleasure to collaborate with the Port Jefferson School District to instruct over 200 teachers across all schools on bleeding control.

Stop The Bleed is a national initiative led by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma that empowers everyday people to act quickly in bleeding emergencies. The program teaches three simple techniques—applying pressure, packing wounds, and using tourniquets—to help save lives before first responders arrive.

The training was led by Acting Chief Michael Presta and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Carl Goodman, with support from Port Jefferson EMS EMTs and Paramedics who provided hands-on instruction and real-world context to participants.

“Equipping our educators with the skills to control life-threatening bleeding is one of the most impactful investments we can make in community safety,” said Acting Chief Michael Presta. “Emergencies don’t wait for first responders to arrive—these teachers are now empowered to act immediately and potentially save a life.”

Partnerships like this between Port Jefferson EMS and the Port Jefferson School District are vital to ensuring community safety and resilience. The two organizations have a long history of working together to deliver training and preparedness initiatives that strengthen the community’s ability to respond to emergencies.

Port Jefferson EMS remains committed to expanding access to lifesaving education and equipping the public with the skills needed to make a difference when it matters most.
